
Dili (Bali Post)—Experience of Bali in managing the environmental destruction and pollution through the Denpasar Sewerage Development Project and Bali Beach Conservation Project acquired appreciation from the Timor-Leste government that is intensively designing the development for the prosperity of its people.
To arrange an environmental program in Timor-Leste from August 18 through September 10, Dr. Ketut Gede Dharma Putra, an environmental researcher from Udayana University was entrusted as international expert team in environmental management assisting the Ministry of Public Works, Environment and Tourism of Timor-Leste. Together with his team, he arranged a document plan regarding to the environmental impact on the developmental activity of urban drainage, sanitation and sustainable tourism development.
Besides, in connection with the tenth celebration of the Timor-Leste Referendum and Dili Trade Expo at Ex-Mercado Municipal, Dharma Putra had an opportunity to serve as speaker on the International Conference and Workshop on Sustainable Development attended by ten countries rendering much assistance to Timor-Leste in its infrastructural development.
Such occasion was also taken advantage by the man becoming the expert of Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) GEF/UNDP/IMO Regional Partnership Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA)—this Environmental Agency of Bali aimed at introducing the eco-friendly certification based on Tri Hita Karana (THK) concept. “The THK Tourism Awards & Accreditation program has been proven effective in endeavoring to diminish the level of environmental pollution and damage in Bali,” stated Deputy Head of THK Tourism Awards & Accreditations team.
Through the certification based on the indigenous wisdom (THK) was expected that tourism industry and other activities resulting in environmental impact could perform sustainable management and monitoring to reduce the environmental damage and pollution.
In the meantime, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Timor-Leste, Xanana Gusmao, in the conference, Monday (Aug 24) stated that his government received much assistance from international party for the development of his territory. For that purpose, his party would like to give an opportunity in several fields. “They were appreciated equally as other experts from Australian, American and European universities,” he said while adding the existence of distance proximity and cultural similarity denoted the main capital to make easier the cooperation between Timor-Leste and the researchers from Bali in particular and Indonesia in general.
